The Foolish Mr. Keating of Dead Poets Society :: Dead Poets Society Essays
The Foolish Mr. Keating of Dead Poet's Society The Dead Poet's Society raises an interesting question: When educating teen-agers, is it better to use the school's policy of Tradition, Honor, Discipline, and Excellence or Mr. Keating's philosophy of carpe diam (seize the day)? Mr. Keating believed that people should "suck the marrow out of life" and live like a free thinking person even at the young age of seventeen. Centuries of teaching experience prove Mr. Keating is wrong and that tradition and discipline are the correct methods of educating. Our fledgling nation of only 200 years is a mental midget in this world. Why is it that we are 17th in the world in education. Is it that we are stupid? No, it is that we have diverged from the old world teaching methods of Europe and Asia. Japan is third is the world in education. The reason is simple. Although they manufacture most of the world's calculators, not one is used in the classroom. One really begins to understand math when taught by route memorization and physical punishment for incorrect answers. Anyone who has been "rapped on the knuckles" by a nun with a ruler can attest to this fact. The one thing that a student needs in life is structure. Without this, he or she cannot function in a school environment. When a bell rings, you must go to class. When a teacher assigns homework, you do it. No questions asked. No individual thought. The only marrow that should be sucked out of a students life is that of education. That, after all, is why they are in school. To learn and no other reason. In the end, it should be noted that although Mr. Keating's teaching philosophy was debunked, he made one good point.

Persuasive Essay Essay
When you rummage through your refrigerator what do you seek? A bag of chips, a fruity flavored yogurt, some buttery popcorn? Whatever it is, it all fills you up. Whether it is with a junky treat or something partially healthy. Whatever you choose, it impacts you. It affects the way you sleep, the energy you have, and your blood sugar. So the little discussion of picking a chocolate bar and an apple impacts you greatly in the long run. This is why you should start making healthier choices now when you are still growing. I must admit it is easier for me to choose eating junk food. It may seem yummy and delicious, but its not. Almost every single piece of junk food is either full with fat or artificial flavorings. Did you know that the McDonalds fries contain 610 calories and 29 grams of fat? If you ate a Burger King, meal that contains 1,800 calories, it would take you nearly 6 hours of intense bicycle riding to burn away the calories. The average American kid eats at McDonalds at least one time each month. Teenagers drink around the average of 760 cans of soda per year. And not only does junk food just add fat and other unwanted substances to your body, it also harms you. Obesity is the second cause of death in America. The consumption of sodas has increased the risk of diabetes. Junk food is the major cause of most heart diseases or failures. Junk food causes high cholesterol, which causes long-term damage to your liver. Wow, pretty scary right? Ways to decrease junk food consumption would be the next time when you are rummaging through your refrigerator stop and choose the vegetable section. Pick a banana, or apple. Or leave junk food off-limits until special days or weekends. There are multiple ways, but the biggest way is the next time something sugary is about to go into your mouth, stop and think about all the negative sides. Because not only does junk food affect your weight, it affects your future.

The Case Of Medieval Mystic Christina Of Mirabilis
Life or death: what does one choose? Most people would agree to remain alive without much hesitation. In the case of Medieval Mystic Christina of Mirabilis, Christina also makes the hasty decision to continue living on Earth hoping to appease God even though her decision ultimately leads Christina to push her body to terrifying limits. In Elizabeth Alvilda Petroffââ¬â¢s anthology titled Medieval Womenââ¬â¢s Visionary Literature, Thomas de Cantimprà ©Ã¢â¬â¢s The Life of Christina of St. Trond, Called Christina Mirabilis depicts Christinaââ¬â¢s miraculous resurrection from the dead during her funeral procession at church. Before returning to her body on Earth, Christina is given the ultimate choice of her fate. De Cantimpre describes, ââ¬Å"either [Christina] [will] remain with [God] now, or return to [her] body and suffer the punishments of an immortal soul in a mortal body which, however, will remain unharmed. Thus by the pains [she] will suffer, [she] will deliver all t hose souls in purgatory whom [she] pitiedâ⬠ (184-185). Striving to please God, Christina fully agrees to his terrifying terms of physically suffering on Earth so male sinners in hell may be forgiven. Godââ¬â¢s terms for Christina Mirabilis to be able to continue living on Earth as a human after she is resurrected come across as highly discriminatory for the way Christina must take on the sufferings of male sinners even though she does not commit these sins herself, learn to endure her ââ¬Å"giftâ⬠ of mystical smells, which intensities and
