Viola and Orsino in Twelfth Night by William Shakespeare In William Shakespeares Twelfth Night there are several relationships that develop throughout the play. Among the many characters whose interaction and misunderstanding become the core of the plot, Viola and Orsino have the most significant relationship. The way they interact with one another causes the complex conflict of the play, and as the conflict comes to be more complex the two characters turn from strangers to friends and then to lovers. In the first Act Viola and Orsinos interaction is on the level of two complete strangers. This is a critical essay for Glasgow, 5th March, 1971†², by Edwin Morgan, which is a modern instimatic poem about a shocking crime committed upon a ‘young man and his girl’ by ‘two youths’ and witnessed by two annonymous expressionless drivers who pass by without even aknowledging the crime. Morgan manages to make us feel as if we are watching this incident happen and effectively conveys the incident in the form it takes, unemotional, detached and ‘formal’. This feeling is fistly shown in the title, which is simply a place and date, the title implies it isn’t a poem but some kind of record or headline. In the first stanza Morgan makes excellent use of imagery and word choice, catching our attention with the words ‘With a ragged diamond, of shattered plate glass’ This phrase immediately makes the reader think of something sharp, sparkling and dangerously beautiful. When the words diamond and shop window are put together like this we imagine them as small sparkling diamonds. This impression is carried on later in the poem when the writer describes the setting as ‘a sharp clear night’ Even though the writer has said nothing of what sort of shop it is we subconsciously imagine a jeweller’s shop. This is technique effectively puts the reader at the scene of the crime. In the second verse the poet uses another technique, a metaphor that emphasises the brutality of the attack â€Å"bristling with fragments of glass† This metaphor the could be comparing bristles of hair to the bristles of glass lying on the mans face. It is an effective comparison because it helps the reader imagine all the tiny particles of glass. It shows that poet wants us to recreate the incident as we read, with as much detail as possible. Edwin Morgan also uses clinical language to describe the injurys to the couple. A key example of that is the phrase, ‘spurts arterial blood’ His word choice makes the the scene more violent but also continues to detach the reader from the young victims This successfully describes the scene without showing any emotion from the writer or the victims while still going along with the violent theme. Edwin Morgan uses onomatopoeia when he says the phrases ‘shattered plate glass’, ‘bristling with fragments of glass’ ‘spurts’. The continuation of the ‘sh’ and ‘s’ sounds throughout the poem help paint a clearer picture of the crime in the readers head. This technique is successfull as phrases add sound effects to the silent image in the readers head. The writer does not add any emotions, but he does add facial expressions of the characters. About the young man and his girl he says that, â€Å"Their faces show surprise, shock, And the beginnings of pain† This quote is effectivly emphasises the speed of events this is evident from the writer describing the how the characters are only just beginning to feel the pain when we are reading the third stanza. The couple are also kept anonymous creating one of the main themes of the poem. This use of word choice again doesn’t show any emotion while still successfuly describing to the reader what is happening to the victims. Morgan also tells us about the two youths faces with the phrase ‘Their faces show no expression. ‘ This is the main quote that tells us that the two youths have no remorse for what they have done it also leaves the two youths anonymous like the young couple they have just pushed This helps to carry on the anonymous theme through the poem. The prostitutes involve a man named Corrigan who looks after them a lot. He has an older brother named Ciaran and he begins to like a woman named Lara who was involved in the cause of Corrigan and Jazzys death. He was one of the photographers who was able to capture a picture of the man on the tightrope which he turned into the Newspaper. That is how most of them come around and connect to the tightrope walker. This novel shows a great significance and represents that this is a genuine reflection of life. If our choices in anyway, shape or form cause deliberate hurt to another, we either make a different choice or choose to deal with the consequences. The majority of the characters in this novel took an effect onto all of them. In most cases they were negative consequences that were put upon their lives. The choices that each of them made started that chain reaction that reached out and grabbed someone elses life. It began with one and took its toll on from there. This novel made me believe how one little action that I decide to make can make a huge impact on someone else life. It starts to branch off like a tree and it continues to grow more and more. In my opinion I feel that the phone phreakers continued their prank callings to many places. I feel that they especially continued calling the white house and told them a lot of ridiculous things. The people started to get really upset and fed up with them and so the white house hired a really good police crew to track them down. When the police try to track them down it becomes nearly impossible to find them. I feel that they tell each other all these threats and at one point the police manage to find them. I think that Sam, the youngest hacker ends up leaving them because he didnt want to be involved with them anymore. I fell that he was really so in love with the woman on the phone from New York. I feel that he was a really good hacker that with all information he obtained about her he was able to track her phone number and called her back. She never became bothered by him calling her so often. They continued their long distance friendship for a while and decided that they should meet up. When that day came they both realized how right they felt with each other and decide to get married and live their happy lives. On the other hand, I feel that the hackers got captured and were sent to prison and got pressed a lot of charges and were imprisoned for life.

It is so simple at times that you feel that you little brother might have written it ("The cab stopped in front of the hotel and we all got out and went in. It was a nice hotel, and the people at the desk were very cheerful, and we each had a good small room") but then there is an honesty that comes through. This honesty combines with the honesty of the Hemingway characters to face the real, meaningless(?) life which lies in front of them--it may be simple but it is so real ("I could not find the bathroom. After awhile I found it."), and a simple description is often a profound description. Although Gertrud Stein warned him that "remarks are not literature", this writing went on to influence American short story writing for decades. This book made me look at language ("I read the papers with the coffee and then smoked a cigarette.") Language is a series of symbols which excite meanings in our readers. Simple language does this well. This book reminded me a lot of Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby ("I'm going to marry him. Funny, I haven't thought about him for a week.") Is it a true cross between The Great Gatsby and On the Road? It is a 20th century novel. I can't stand it to think my life is going so fast and I'm not really living it. Don't you ever get the feeling that all your life is going by and you're not taking advantage of it? Do you realize you've lived nearly half the time you have to live already? I liked the descriptions. Many had a double meaning, were vague, nice: With her mouth closed she was a rather pretty girl. I was a little drunk. My arm was around her and she was leaning back against me, and we were quite calm. She was looking into my eyes with that way she had of looking that made you wonder whether she really saw out of her own eyes. They would look on and on after every one else's eyes in the world would have stopped looking. She looked as though there were nothing on earth she would not look at like that, and really she was afraid of so many things. He was a youngfellow and he held the wine bottle at full arms' length and raised it high up, squeezing the leather bag with his hand so the stream of wine hissed into his mouth. He held the bag out there, the wine making a flag, hard trajectory into his mouth, and he kepton swallowing smoothly and regularly. It was like certain dinners I remember from the war.
